Blinds and Awnings in Winchester: Smart Shading for a Family Home
This installation of blinds and awnings in Winchester brought together a sleek shading solution for a family home in the city centre. We fitted INTU bay window blinds, a motorised roof lantern blind, motorised kitchen roller blinds and a Weinor patio awning to provide flexible control over light, glare, privacy and outdoor shade.
Bringing together Winchester Blinds & Shutters and Winchester Awnings, this project shows how carefully chosen internal blinds and external shading can complement each other without compromising the appearance of the home.
The Brief: Sleek Shading Throughout the Living Area
The customer wanted a coordinated solution for the whole area, rather than treating each window and door as a separate project.
The existing bay windows needed neat, practical blinds. Overhead, the roof lantern needed shading to help manage summer glare and heat while supporting warmth retention during colder months. The kitchen’s sliding patio doors required convenient light and privacy control, and the patio needed an awning that would span across the back of the house.
The aim was to retain the bright, open feel of the home while making the space easier to shade when needed.
Our installation included:
INTU blinds fitted to the existing bay windows.
A motorised cellular blind for the roof lantern.
Motorised roller blinds for the kitchen sliding patio doors.
A motorised Weinor awning above the patio doors.

INTU Blinds for the Existing Bay Windows
For the bay area, we fitted INTU blinds to the existing windows, creating a close-fitting finish that suited the customer’s preference for a sleek appearance.
The fabric chosen for this installation is not blackout. It softens incoming sunlight and reduces glare while still allowing natural light to filter through, helping the room remain light and airy even when the blinds are down.
If you want to soften sunlight without making your room feel dark, our guide to privacy without losing natural lightexplores how different blinds and shutters can help balance daylight, comfort and privacy.
Bay windows bring character and daylight into a room, but their individual panes can need different levels of shading as the sun moves. Fitting blinds to each window gives the family flexibility to shade particular sections rather than covering the entire bay at once.
The compact design keeps the window area looking uncluttered, adding practical light control while retaining the existing windows and the bright, open feel of the space.

A Motorised Roof Lantern Blind for Seasonal Comfort
The roof lantern brought daylight into the living area, but overhead glazing also needed its own shading solution.
We installed a motorised roof lantern blind to help reduce glare and limit solar heat gain during summer. Closing the blind provides shading directly beneath the lantern, giving the family more control over strong overhead sunlight.
Warmth retention was another part of the brief. A suitable roof lantern blind can help reduce heat loss through the glazed area when closed, although its thermal performance depends on the fabric, fit and glazing.
Motorisation makes this hard-to-reach blind straightforward to operate, so the family can adjust the overhead shading as conditions change.

Motorised Roller Blinds for Kitchen Sliding Patio Doors
The kitchen’s sliding patio doors connect the house with the garden and bring in plenty of natural light. We fitted roller blinds with motorised operation to provide adjustable shading and privacy across this large glazed area.
Roller blinds suited the customer’s preference for clean lines. They can be raised to open up the view or lowered when the family wants to soften sunlight or create more privacy.
Motorisation also makes regular adjustment convenient across the patio doors. The family can change the shading without manually operating each blind.
Our motorised and electric blinds page explains the options available for large windows, glazed doors and hard-to-reach areas.
If you’re considering motorised blinds for your own home, our guide to powering options for motorised blinds explains the differences between battery, mains and solar power, and what to consider when choosing a suitable system.

A Motorised Weinor Awning Across the Rear of the Winchester Home
Outside, we installed a motorised Weinor awning above the patio doors, spanning across the back of the house.
The awning had two purposes: to create shade on the patio and to help reduce direct sunlight reaching the kitchen glazing.
External shading complements the blinds inside. When extended, the awning intercepts sunlight before it reaches the doors, helping to limit solar heat gain and glare in the adjoining kitchen. It also creates a shaded outdoor area for the family to enjoy.
Motorised operation makes it easy to extend or retract the awning as shade is needed. Retracting it allows more daylight into the home when external shading is unnecessary.
This part of the project was supplied and fitted through Winchester Awnings, our sister business specialising in made-to-measure outdoor shading.
If you are planning something similar, our guide to how big your awning should be explains why width, projection and the position of the sun all matter. You can also compare everyday operation in our motorised vs manual awnings guide.

How These Blinds and Awnings in Winchester Work Together
The value of this installation lies in giving each part of the space an appropriate shading solution.
The INTU blinds provide local control at the bay windows. The roof lantern blind manages overhead light. The kitchen roller blinds offer additional shading and privacy at the sliding doors, while the Weinor awning shades the patio and helps keep direct sun away from the kitchen glass.
These products give the family different ways to respond throughout the day. They can use external shade while retaining the garden view, lower the roof lantern blind when overhead sunlight becomes strong, or close the kitchen blinds for evening privacy.
It is a coordinated approach to shading that supports the way the family uses both the house and patio.

The Finished Installation: Flexible Shade with a Clean Appearance
The completed project brings together four shading solutions across one Winchester family home.
Close-fitting bay window blinds and simple roller blinds support the sleek appearance the customer wanted. Motorisation adds convenience at the roof lantern, patio doors and awning, while the combination of internal and external shading gives the family greater flexibility throughout the year.
This is a useful example of why a room with several sources of sunlight can benefit from a combination of blinds and awnings, each chosen for the area it needs to shade.
